An Interview with VFS Ones To Watch - Asger Juel Larsen

Every season a highlight for the team here at Fashion Scout is announcing our selection to each of the four designers that will take part in the Ones To Watch showcase. For many up and coming designers the OTW initiative is an invaluable opportunity that promises to launch their brands into the industry in a back-to-back group show. Described by FTape as "a collaborative platform for four of the most promising new talents", each season the show attracts a flurry of press and buyers eager to see what each of these innovative designers create. We spoke to Men's Ones To Watch designer Asger Juel Larsen after we broke the news...

How are you feeling on winning the Ones to Watch from Vauxhall Fashion Scout?

I truly feel honoured to be part of Vauxhall Fashion Scout. Such a great opportunity to show my new collection to press and buyers from around the world. The Ones To Watch concept is extremely relevant, and it helps new designers approach industry people in a way that is usually only for the few.

How did you celebrate?

I called my mom. Afterwards I had to continue the preparations for the press show at London college of Fashion, but with an energy I find hard to describe. Happy to the bones.

What was your experience in the fashion industry before forming your own brand?

I've been working in different areas of the industry. I interned at both John Richmond and Burberry Prorsum, which was a good learning experience.

Who is your favourite designer and why?

Paco Rabanne. Because of his revolutionary use of materials.

If you were not a fashion designer, what would you do?

A Captain on a pirate ship

What music do you listen to when you designing?

Anything from progressive techno to classic music.
What was your inspiration for your last season’s collection?

The collection focuses on blended cultures and living in unpredictable times. The collection is drawn on elements of the dress and culture of North America in the 1860’s, in the period of civil war – reflected in the name of the collection 'Uncle Sam' The silhouette is sharp and structured – working with bold shapes garments are either very fitted or very loose. Materials such as soft cashmere wool, Japanese denim and Nappa leather are used throughout. Buffalo teeth from Texas are incorporated in a spider mesh cape and he has used screen printed denim.  The collection is dark, grey and dusty and exemplifies my idea of a post-apocalyptic Gothic America. The shoes and boots which accessorize the collection have been designed in collaboration with British Rock ‘n’ Roll footwear brand Underground.

Where would you like to see your brand in a few years?

Strong and healthy

Thanks Asger! We can't wait for Men's Ones To Watch on Wednesday 22nd.
